Song of Trust and Security in God
1 Protect me, O God, for in you I take refuge. 2 I say to the Lord, ‘You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.’
3 As for the holy ones in the land, they are the noble, in whom is all my delight.
4 Those who choose another god multiply their sorrows; their drink-offerings of blood I will not pour out or take their names upon my lips.
5 The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. 6 The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; I have a goodly heritage.
7 I bless the Lord who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me. 8 I keep the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices; my body also rests secure. 10 For you do not give me up to Sheol, or let your faithful one see the Pit.
11 You show me the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy; in your right hand are pleasures for evermore.
The title of the psalm is one that catches the eye, yes? A Song of Trust and Security in God.
This psalm, in my opinion, is a great way to start the day.
How do you start your day on the right foot?
My first job out of college was in the business office at an engineering firm. My supervisor was a good person to work with on most days, but when it was a BAD day, we all knew it. We learned that whatever mood she came in the door with was the mood for the day. I remember one day when she came into the office with a spring in her step and a smile on her face. She said she heard her favorite song on the radio on the way in – “You Lost That Loving Feeling” by the Righteous Brothers, and it made her day. (Kind of a strange song to put a spring in your step, now that I think about it.) We considered calling the radio station and requesting it every morning!
What about you? What sets the tone of the day for you? I invite you today to choose a verse from today’s psalm as a mantra for the day or for the week. What verse will help you face today? What verse will be an inspiration to meet the week to come?
Maybe print it out and put it on the refrigerator (I know I will see it several times if I put it there!), or on your computer screen or some place that will remind you.
There are words of comfort and peace and joy. In these words, I find a hope and blessed assurance that God is in charge and will make a way.
What word speaks to you today? How will that carry you in the week to come?
Let us pray: Thank you, Loving Father, for this new day. Bless my words and actions, that they may bring honor to you. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
