Song for the Day: We Three Kings / God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

First of all, let me say Happy New Year! 2022 is finally here.

This past year for my family and me has been quite a rollercoaster. And in conversations with many of you, I know you have also experienced highs and lows. We pray for the blessing of a new year filled with hope, health, happiness and peace.

I share another one of my favorite songs by a band called “Barenaked Ladies.” It is a mash-up of the two Christmas Carols “We Three Kings” and “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.”

An interesting note – “We Three Kings” does not appear in our most recent hymnal. It could be that the title makes some claims that are not true or simply assumed. These Magi were NOT kings – they were astrologers (at best). And the number has only been attributed to them because of the number of gifts they bring.

A wonderful Far Side Christmas Card we once received –

If you can’t read the words, at the bottom, it reads: “Unbeknownst to most theologians, there was a fourth wiseman, who was turned away for bringing fruitcake”

All that being said, the song reminds us that the Magi followed a star. They rejoiced. They worshipped. The gave their gifts.

What joy there is in giving. What joy there is in finding the one who brings joy to the world.

May we also come and worship Him - Christ the Lord.

Here is a link to the song – enjoy!

Let us pray: Almighty and ever-living God, you revealed the incarnation of your Son by the brilliant shining of a star. Shine the light of your justice always in our hearts and over all lands, and accept our lives as the treasure we offer in your praise and for your service, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen
