Song to Share – Canticle of Zechariah

In yesterday’s devotion, I shared the story of Zechariah and Elizabeth and the birth of their son John the Baptist. The beautiful song that Zachariah sings when he presents John to be named eight days after his birth brings tears to my eyes.
When I was in seminary, every Monday morning we would gather in the chapel for Morning Prayer. The Gospel canticle that we sang were these words of Zechariah. And every time I read these words, this tune is what comes to mind. The song is found in Luke 1:68-79.
Here is a recording of that song.
I also found a more contemporary version of Zechariah’s song:
What song of praise comes to mind for you? What images?
When I hold my grandchildren in my arms, I am amazed at the wonder of God’s creation, and wonder what their future will hold. What does God have in store for them?
What does God have in store for you and me?
Let us pray: Almighty God, we behold your wonder in the splendor of a newborn. You are the giver of life. May we use this gift given to each of us to serve you along the way. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen
